Northwood ends season with overtime loss

T'Wolves fall at Grand Valley, 72-70

ALLENDALE -- The Northwood University men's basketball team saw its 2009-10 season come to an end with a 72-70 loss at Grand Valley State Saturday night (February 27).

NU's season come to an end at 12-14 overall, 9-13 in the GLIAC. GVSU stands at 20-7 overall, 16-6 in the GLIAC.

Northwood trailed 13-6, but controlled the play the rest of the first half. The Timberwolves led by as many as 14 in opening 20 minutes before settling for a 37-26 advantage at the break. Northwood shot 53.6 percent from the floor and connected on five 3-pointers in the opening 20 minutes.

The Timberwolves maintained the lead the entire second half until the final moments. NU missed five straight free throws in the final 1:07, allowing the Lakers to hang around. . A GVSU layup with three seconds remaining tied the score at 62.

The score in overtime was tied in the final moments when the Lakers connected on a jumper with 1.3 seconds remaining to go up 72-70. NU had a chance to tie the game, but the length of the floor pass fell incomplete to give the Lakers the win.

Seniors Chris Johnson (Belleville, Mich.) and Lionel Sullivan (Detroit, Mich./DePorres. made their final games at Northwood count. Johnson finished with 27 points, eight rebounds, three blocks and three steals. Sullivan totaled 25 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
