Oregon is planning to offer Michigan State coach Tom Izzo the largest contract in college basketball, according to Eugene, Ore., TV station KEZI.
A source within the Oregon athletic department has confirmed Izzo's name is on the list of coaching candidates provided by the search firm Spencer Stuart. But no offer has been made, nor have there been discussions between the parties, the TV station reports.
The proposed contract, backed by Oregon's biggest booster, Nike chairman Phil Knight, would surpass the game's largest current contract, given to Kentucky coach John Calipari (eight years, $31.65 million).
Former Ducks athletic director Pat Kilkenny, who is leading the coaching search after Mike Bellotti's resignation as AD, is visiting candidates and has said he expects to fill the school's vacancy as early as next week, according to the Oregonian. There's also a report that Kilkenny visited with Pittsburgh coach Jamie Dixon, as well.
After 13 years as Oregon's men's coach, Ernie Kent was released from his contract on March 16.
Izzo was courted by the NBA's Atlanta Hawks in 2000 and reportedly was a candidate for the Kentucky job in 2007 after Tubby Smith resigned. The Wildcats hired Billy Gillispie.
One writer, Michael Rosenberg of the Detroit Free Press, has already made it clear that Izzo won't leave his post at MSU. Read the story here. Zero chance of Tom Izzo leaving MSU for Oregon
