Mt. Pleasant pounded in Division Two softball final
BATTLE CREEK -- A pair of Mid-Michigan schools have reigned supreme in the 2010 high school baseball season.
Shepherd, in Division Three, and Beal City, in Division Four, each emerged victorious in their respective state championship games Saturday afternoon from Battle Creek. The Blue Jays staged a remarkable comeback from a 6-0 deficit after just two innings against a 43-2 squad from Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard. Scoring four in the third and five more in the fourth, Shepherd would eventually score 13 unanswered runs to stun the Fighting Irish, and earn a 13-6 victory. The Blue Jays have now won back-to-back state titles.
Beal City's triumph over Lake Michigan Catholic in Division Four was far less dramatic, as the Aggies busted open a tight game in the seventh with three runs to turn a two-run lead into an eventual 5-0 win. Like Shepherd, the Aggies have now also won consecutive state baseball titles, to go along with a state crown in football back in November.
Things didn't go nearly as well for the Mt. Pleasant softball team, however. Poor pitching and porous defense allowed Stevensville Lakeshore to jump out to an early lead in their Division Two battle, and the Lancers never looked back. The Oilers fell by an 8-0 final.
