DETROIT (AP) -- The Red Wings have selected Notre Dame center Riley Sheahan (SHAY-han) with the 21st pick overall in the NHL draft.

Detroit drafted a forward Friday night in the first round for the first time since 1992.

The team had a first-round pick for just the fourth time in 10 years.

Assistant general manager Jim Nill announced the selection of Sheahan in Los Angeles, saying he was "a big, strong centerman," who the team projects to be "a power forward," in the NHL.

The 19-year-old Sheahan had six goals and 17 points as a freshman last year for the Fighting Irish.

Detroit traditionally keeps prospects in the American Hockey League to let them gain experience before giving them a chance to earn a chance to play for the storied franchise.
