Great Lakes has won 12 of last 13 games
DAYTON, OH -- Gorman Erickson hit a two-run home run to break a 2-2 tie and lift the Great Lakes Loons to a 6-4 victory over the Dayton Dragons before a crowd of 8,061 on Monday night at Fifth Third Field.
The Loons completed a sweep of the three-game series by winning for the 12th time in their last 13 games.
All three games in the series were decided by two runs as the Loons improved their second half record to 15-3. Their full-season record of 58-29 is the best in professional baseball.
For the first time in the series, Dayton took the lead early. In the first inning, Didi Gregorius singled to center field and raced around to third on a single to right by Henry Rodriguez. Chris Richburg followed with a single to right to bring in Gregorius. Cameron Satterwhite's sacrifice fly brought in Rodriguez to make it 2-0.
Great Lakes tied the game in the top of the third inning on a two-out, two-run single by Jaime Ortiz to bring the score to 2-2.
In the top of the sixth, the Loons took the lead. Gorman Erickson belted a two-out, two-run home run to right field to make it 4-2.
Dayton pulled to within a run in the bottom of the sixth when Ryan LaMarre was hit by a pitch and scored from first on a double to left by Mark Fleury to make the score 4-3.
But Great Lakes answered that with a single run in the top of the seventh to again lead by two at 5-3. The Dragons scored in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double by Richburg to bring in Gregorius from third to make it 5-4. The Loons again extended the lead to two by scoring one run in the top of the eighth to lead 6-4. The Dragons did not seriously threaten to score over their final two innings at-bat.
Dragons starting pitcher Jacob Johnson worked the first six innings, allowing four runs on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts to suffer the loss and fall to 4-6.
