Merrill shocked by Ravenna, 32-30, after blowing 17-point lead
MIDLAND -- It might be quite some time before anyone wearing Fenton apparel will be welcome in the city of Midland.
One week after disposing of Midland in a 42-35 shootout victory, the Tigers once again invaded Midland Community Stadium to take on Midland Dow. After owning a slim, 3-0 lead at the half, the Tigers found their rhythm in the second half and mauled the Chargers for three touchdowns, en route to a 24-0 victory. Fenton moves on to the Division Two state quarterfinals, where they will meet Walled Lake Central.
In Division Three, Mt. Pleasant remained undefeated after a stress-free, 28-0 victory over visiting St. John's. The Oilers scored touchdowns on their first two possessions and never looked back. They will host Cadillac in the state quarterfinals next Saturday, at 1 p.m.
The biggest stunner of the day took place in Division Seven, at Merrill. An eight-yard touchdown run by quarterback Kyle Tack gave the Vandals a seemingly-comfortable lead of 23-6. But the visiting Bulldogs patiently chipped away at the deficit, and scored the game-winning touchdown with just 0.5 seconds left on the clock after a sure interception went through a Merrill defender's hands on the previous play. Ravenna earned the shocking, 32-30 comeback victory.
Elsewhere in Division Seven, Whittemore-Prescott proved no match for McBain, as the Comets earned a 20-0 victory. Finally, in Division Eight, Beal City saw their hopes of back-to-back state titles come to a screeching halt, with a 37-0 setback at Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart.
