Timberwolves fall to namesake based in Florida, 75-69

WEST PALM BEACH, FL -- The Northwood University men's basketball team dropped a 75-69 contest to Northwood (FL) Sunday night (January 2).

The contest was the first-ever meeting between the two Northwood campuses, which has been dubbed the "President's Cup."

The Timberwolves fall to 4-9 overall. The Seahawks improve to 9-2 overall.

In the first half, the Timberwolves led by as many as nine early, but struggled with their shot in the final minutes of the half. They connected on 34.3 percent from the floor (12-35), allowing the Seahawks to build a 38-35 lead at the break.

The Timberwolves trailed by as many as eight early in the second half but fought back to take a 60-59 lead with less than six minutes remaining. But the Seahawks proved to be the better team down the stretch, scoring eight straight points in over a 1:20 stretch in the final moments to put the game away.

Overall for the game, the Timberwolves shot 36.9 percent from the floor (24-65). They also went 8-30 from 3-point range (26.7 percent) and 13-20 from the free throw line (65.0).

Joe Powers (Holt, Mich./Lansing CC) came off the bench to lead Northwood with 20 points. He connected on four of Northwood's eight 3-pointers. Bobby Lewis (Saginaw, Mich./Mott CC) added 19 points and seven rebounds.

Northwood will travel to Palm Beach Atlantic Monday night (Jan. 3). Game time is set for 7 p.m.
