7-1 loss is fifth setback in six games on current homestand
MIDLAND -- Despite receiving nine walks from Dayton's pitchers in Wednesday night's game, the Great Lakes Loons only scored one run on two hits to lose, 7-1 to the Dragons, putting the Loons on a four-game losing streak, their longest of the season.
The Loons got on the board first in the third inning with an RBI-double from Leon Landry, but the Loons found only one more hit: a single by Casio Grider in the fifth. Offensively, the Loons have only registered one run in their last 21 innings.
Down 1-0, the Dayton Dragons broke through with a three-run inning in the fifth, capitalizing on two hits and a Loons error. Donald Lutz singled to get on base and advanced to second on a throwing error from Blake Dean, who was attempting to catch the lead runner at second on a fielder’s choice. Tucker Barnhart followed with a bases-clearing triple to give Dayton the lead and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Devin Lohman.
A Loons bright spot on the night was the performance turned in by starting pitcher Garrett Gould, who allowed only one earned run on four hits through six innings of work. The righty from Kansas fanned eight batters and walked three, but was charged with the loss, his second. Reliever Bret Montgomery pitched the final three innings for the Loons, but ran into trouble in the ninth; he finished with four earned runs on seven hits across three innings.
“When you don’t swing the bats well, there won’t be very many offensive opportunities, though we did have nine walks,” Loons manager John Shoemaker said. “We did strikeout 15 times and we didn’t put enough pressure on the Dayton defense; we struck out too much.”
The Dragons prevented any hope of a rally in the top of the ninth inning when Theo Bowe hit a two-run triple to the right-field corner and scored on a single from Dayton shortstop Billy Hamilton. Hamilton later scored in the inning on a David Vidal double that just landed in fair territory. The shortstop entered the game with 37 stolen bases, the most in the Midwest League, and picked up one Wednesday. The Dayton team converted five of seven base stealing attempts.
Dayton’s starter Tanner Robles picked up his third win of the year, tossing 10 strikeouts in five innings. Drew Hayes got the save.
The Loons will get up bright and early Thursday for Dow Diamond’s final School Kids Day of the season with first pitch scheduled for 10:35 a.m. The Loons will send RHP Red Patterson (4-2, 3.40) to the hill against Dayton’s LHP Daniel Renken (1-4, 3.38).
