The Great Lakes Loons get a confident win on the road to start their series against South Bend, taking the game 8-2.
Loons pitcher Gustavo Gomez won his fifth game of the season, striking out six batters for the Silver Hawks.
Both teams scored a run in the first inning. Loons center fielder James Baldwin tripled and was run in by Kevin Taylor, and Silver Hawks right fielder Chris Ellison ran in on a single by Matt Helm.
Great Lakes grabbed the lead in the fifth when Jan Vazquez had an RBI single to score right fielder Joseph Winker.
The Loons went on to score three runs in the fifth, and four in the seventh. Baldwin came up big throughout the game, going 3 for 5 with three RBI’s.
With the Midwest League recently finishing the all-star break, and therefore passing the halfway mark in the season, teams have started over with new records for the second half. With the win over South Bend, Great Lakes improves to 2-2 after the all-star break, one game behind Bowling Green and Lansing for first place in the Eastern division.
The Loons continue their series against South Bend on Tuesday, June 26, and Wednesday, June 27. They will then return home for a series against the Fort Wayne TinCaps on Thursday, June 28.
