KOCHVILLE TWP. -- The Saginaw Valley State University Cardinals said they have to play an entireĀ game of good football if they plan on winning the Axe Bowl over Northwood for a second straight season.

The Cardinals beat the Timberwolves in last year's game 28-20. In the last four matchups, SVSU has a record of 3-1 against Northwood. The margin of victory in those gamesĀ is a combined 19 points.

Coach Jim Collins said he expects a competitive matchup between the 4-1 (3-1 in GLIAC) schools.

"Whenever these two teams get together, there's not a lot of love lost," Collins said. "It's a battle. Whoever plays the best over those 60 minutes will win the game."

This year's Axe Bowl will be at Hantz Stadium. Kickoff is at noon on Saturday, October 6.
