LANSING -- The Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) results were released today, showing statewide gains in reading, mathematics, and writing in all grades.

Students gained in reading in all grade levels, though grades 3 and 8 showed the largest increase.

Math also showed proficiency gains at all levels, with grades 3, 4, 5 having the largest jump.

"These gains demonstrate Michigan's teachers and students are rising to the challenge of the rigorous standards established last year, " said State Superintendent Mike Flanagan.

The MEAP assessments are given annually and are based on career- and college-ready standards.

To determine proficiency, MEAP scores are divided into four levels: Not Proficient, Partially Proficient, Proficient, and Advanced.

Students scoring in either Proficient or Advanced are considered to have "met or exceeded" standards, and are therefore proficient in that subject.

Michigan students are up in virtually every category in every grade with the exception of science in grades 5 and 8 and social studies in grade 9.

The results have also been released for each district and school.

Just go to the MEAP site right online.

From here you can select which school or district you wish to know about, and select Fall 2012 for the current school or see past results as well.
