FLINT -- After a cool down over the past week, another heat wave will grip the region on Tuesday as temperatures will rise to near triple-digits and record highs.

The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning and Advisory for the Tri-Cities, Flint, Owosso and the Thumb.

The previous record-highs for July 17 are 100 degrees in Saginaw and 101 in Flint set back in 1931.  Temps are expected to reach and possibly exceed that on Tuesday.

Also, scattered thunderstorms are possible after 4 p.m. on Tuesday through the evening time. There is a chance of severe weather with some of these storms.  The strongest cells will be capable of producing wind gusts up to 70 mph as they move east at 40 mph.

The storms will result as a cold front drops down from the north and collides with a hot and unstable air mass residing over Southern Michigan.

Flint Schools are also waving the white flag because of the heat as they will be cancelling their summer programs on Tuesday.

In addition, Genesee and Lapeer Counties are under a moderate drought according to the U.S. Drought Monitoring Service.

Brown crisp dry lawns and dying plans across the region won't get much relief today despite the possibility of storms.
