DETROIT (AP) -- A woman has been found dead behind the steering wheel of a sport utility vehicle on a Detroit freeway.

Michigan State Police say the woman was found by a courtesy van driver about 3:40 a.m. Saturday on Interstate 75 just north of downtown.

The van's driver stopped to lend assistance after spotting the SUV idling along the northbound shoulder of the freeway. He radioed the state police after noticing bullet holes in the driver's side of the SUV and the woman slumped over the steering wheel.

Investigators had not confirmed the woman's identity as of early Saturday.

The northbound lanes of the freeway were closed for several hours as police gathered evidence.
