LAPEER COUNTY -- The Lapeer County Road Commission worked through much of the morning and day Friday to clear mostly back roadways.

Officials say overnight rain on top of packed snow caused slick conditions.

"Like a skating rink in spots where trees cover the road. Some we got opened up yesterday. What wasn't opened was pretty bad," says Lapeer County road commission managing director, Rick Pearson.

Pearson says there are 850 miles of gravel road in Lapeer County that crews worked to clear.

The conditions closed Lapeer County schools which came as a surprise to some parents.

"I was shocked I didn't think on such a nice day they would cancel school but I understand the back roads are bad so better safe than sorry right," says Deana Dunham Lapeer County Resident.

Roadway officials say they plan to be back on the roads Sunday for the next round of Winter weather.
